This is the craft of the application of lacquer on wood in pleasing shades to create a distinctive appeal. Etikoppaka in Andhra Pradesh is the hometown of this craft.It is said that this craft originated in the neighboring Nakkapalli village before it spread to Etikoppaka, its present home. The proximity to the forest area with plenty of yield of Ankudu Karra, a light species of wood, promoted the concentration of this art in Etikoppaka.

Lacquering is done on a lathe, hand - or machine - operated. For turning slender and delicate items, the hand-lathe is preferred. Lac is applied in a dry state. That is, the lacstick is pressed against the woodenware to be lacquered. As the latter keeps revolving the heat from friction softens the lac, enabling the colour to stick. Designs are painted with a brush on figures, objects and toys. These articles are made by using lathes, known as "Turned Toys".

The lac bangles are the most popular lacquer ware. In ancient times, these bangles were studded with gold and precious stones attaching a status symbol. Today, they are available with beads, stones and mirrors in attractive colours and designs to add to the beauty of a woman in the most economical way. At present, the artisans have also involved to making the decorative items as flower vases, dolls, small containers, bowls and stools etc.

The Lad bazar on the Charminar road is the major lac bangle market in the city. One can bargain for the price in this market.The lac bangles are a must on the wrists of every Hyderabadi bride. What else could bring out the color and festivity of a once-in-a-lifetime occasion.
