Location
Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Sanctuary or simply Srisailam Sanctuary is
located in the Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda
districts of Andhra Pradesh, one of the southern states of India.
The sanctuary is located close to the town of Macherla, about 150
kilometres from the capital city, Hyderabad. The place is connected
by a series of roads, with the state capital and regions around.
Overview
Srisailam Sanctuary covers an area of about 3568 square kilometres
and features several attractions. The sanctuary is surrounded by
hills that provides the cover to the living forms residing in the
sanctuary. The hills called Nallamalai Hills surround the south
eastern edge, where as the north western edge is bounded by the
river, Krishna. The north eastern area of the sanctuary is occupies
by the Nagarjunasagar dam and as such provides the prefix
Nagarjunasagar. The plateau land of sanctuary is considered as one
of the oldest geological formations and dates back to some 2000
million years.
Flora and Fauna
The forest floor is covered by dry deciduous forest. The plant
species include Aegele marmelos (Bengal quince or wood apple),
Bombax ceiba (Simal), Bridelia retusa, etc. The forests also have
thick bushes and thickets providing cover to the animal species. The
sanctuary was known to be inhabited by as many as 100 animals from
tiger family. Their number has been decreasing and the population
has become rare consisting of only 20 animals at present. Some other
animals residing in the sanctuary include Leopards, Wolves,
Sambhars, Black Bucks, Spotted Deer, Nilgai, Mugger Crocodiles and
many Indian snake species.
Accessibility
The nearest town to the sanctuary is Macherla. The town is provided
with a road and rail head.
